Here’s a clip from I believe September 14th of Bill Maher’s show on HBO in which he rips on the iPhone early adopters, whom he likes to refer to as “dip$h*ts who stand in line for six hours.”
Sorry Bill, but my *real* girlfriend actually stood in line and waited for mine. Further, the ones who went out and bought the iPhone were the ones who could afford it, the business folk not the “nerds.” So please, work on your material. It wasn’t funny to begin with, now it’s just getting downright lame.

As usual, Maher is ON TARGET.
Meanwhile he who stood in line, or had his “real” girlfiend (no pun) do it for them- should get a life, not an iPhone.
He needs one, as do all the groupies groping in line for new plastic.
As usual, Bob Beadle is OFF TARGET. I stood in line for a total of 30 minutes, and got what I wanted. If I stood in line for an amazing new car and then it went on sale a few months later, would you say the same thing? I guess I can say this safely: Bill Maher is a dipshit if he ever bought anything that went down in price eventually. And he probably did.
Hahahhaa, hit a nerve?
Seriously, no matter how over the top people go insulting iFanboys, it seems to pale in comparison as to how ridiculously disportionate their reactions are.
I thought the iPhone was pretty cool as a device, but the full deal sucks thanks to AT&T and the idea of exclusivity in general.
People that payed to the end of the earth for them annoy me when there are so many better things that money could be spent on. (Those that are less fortunate than you).
Bill Maher’s comedy is questionable at times, but generally he is funny. What makes you so defensive is adhering to and believing in the philosophy of being a “dipsh-t.” You in fact are a dipsh-t. You will always be a dipsh-t, and Bill Maher is going to make money for years to come making fun of your sorry ass. Go buy something nice for your girlfriend, and quit treating her as you would a dog to stand in line for bullsh-t you don’t need.
Cry me a river Jon, do i detect a little bitterness that Bill pointed out to you how pointless and sad it was to wait in line for a phone?
Sorry, Bill is right. It’s just a phone. Get over it. Standing in line for a freaking cell phone is lame…IMHO.
Your girlfriend is a dip$h*
“Further, the ones who went out and bought the iPhone were the ones who could afford it”
If they could afford it, then they have no real place to whine about the price cut.
I think he has a good point…
I also love how apple people immediately go to the cost factor to artificially inflate themselves. (don’t get me wrong, I love my apple prods. but I’m not drinking their kool-aid)
You made your girlfriend stand in line for your new iPhone?
Lame.
Besides, if you had your head screwed on right you’d have realized the first 3 generations of any apple product to date has been frought with problems (remember the first iPods?).
They’ve already sited a few hacks that are a danger to personal information… So, enjoy that.
Hope your *real* girlfriend likes standing in the returns line too.
@ John - No bitterness from me, I didn’t wait in any line. No bitterness from my gf either, she said it was a nice experience to witness perhaps the most highly anticipated product launch ever.
@ Mike - I agree 100%, and to this day have not complained once. I got 10 great weeks of use before most people.
Bill’s comments were hilarious, and right on the mark. Stop being so sensitive. Anyone who waits in line for ANYTHING that is NOT going to be a limited issuing (like tickets) needs to get their life’s priorities in order.
@ RY - Nobody made anyone do anything actually, I had to work, she didn’t and volunteered to go, simple as that. When you’re in a happy relationship with a significant other, you do things for them to show them how much you care. It’s the little, from the heart acts that matter.
@ Matt - This post wasn’t supposed to be taken as me being sensitive to Bill’s rant. Rather, I made this post to illustrate how erroneous and not funny his tirade is.
Jon: “nice experience to witness perhaps the most highly anticipated product launch ever.”
Yes, it was one of the most highly anticipated launches, ever. In retrospect, you should also see that it was one of the most over hyped and and undeserving of the attention it received.
Jon: “This post wasn’t supposed to be taken as me being sensitive to Bill’s rant. Rather, I made this post to illustrate how erroneous and not funny his tirade is.”
It has achieved the exact opposite effect. Thanks to Reddit, thousands of people are viewing your blog, and most of the agree with the video.
Jon: “the ones who went out and bought the iPhone were the ones who could afford it, the business folk not the “nerds.””
Business folk use phones that are designed for business. That (crappy) phone is the Blackberry. The iPhone has no innovation in the business arena, because it wasn’t aimed at that market. You will not see any corporate iPhone rollouts. It was successfully marketed to nerdy fanboys and people who try to use a price tag as a status symbol.
Jon, thank you for that little bit of relationship advice… I think I finally understand it all now….
I’m not knocking your relationship, (ok, maybe I was, just a touch) I’m simply saying that this whole little post simply reinforces Bill Maher’s sarcasm diluted point…
Elitists, and elitist wannabes need to find some form of higher fulfillment.
Really. Since when did waiting in line for an already broken product mae you a better person? Or prove your manhood? I did R&D work for a undisclosed tech company for years… Does that place me in god status, since the products I developed are only now hitting the market?
I’d say you have about 3 years for standing in line to get caught up.
It’s only not funny if you don’t prove his point… Now, it’s funny.
I waited in line for 8 hours and had a good time. I got to catch up with a friend who waited with me, played a game of monopoly, watched a good movie, got food delivered by my (real) girlfriend, and got my picture in the newspaper all over new england. I guess that does sound pretty lame…but I would have done the same thing staying at home, and this way I got an iPhone out of it
@ PNX - “one of the most over hyped and and undeserving of the attention it received” - I think that’s a little bit of apples to oranges, because I would disagree and say it was very well deserving of all the attention it received. As for the business user and Blackberry, I certainly agree, however my point was that business users are the ones buying them because they are the only ones that could afford them at $600. All of the iPhones I saw in the weeks following the launch were carried by men with suits (often holding a Blackberry as well because in many cases the company pays for the Blackberry and the business user has their own personal mobile phone — in this case iPhone). Finally, as for using the price tag as a status symbol, that’s just retarded. I love my iPhone and don’t regret getting it, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt the wallet a bit initially. So anyone who flaunts the iPhone for its price tag probably has way too much money.
Bill is spot on here. Darn funny.
And if you find offense to what he says, either you are a loser, or you need to lighten up (or both).
Just relax.
Don’t worry Jon. I posted this to digg and you should have some apple love in a bit. On a serious note though I didn’t think you made that big of a deal out of this. I personally don’t think Maher is very funny but that’s just my opinion.
@ toasterweasel - Thank you that is much needed right now lol. Yea I didn’t think so either, but you know how Reddit users can get sometimes. I can be the same way
Check that. I have no friends on digg so your probably on your own. Good luck! Just remember not all of us on reddit are blatantly biased Apple haters.
I think Bill is absolutely on point. I LOVE Mac/Apple products, but there’s no way I was standing in line and paying $600 for something just so that I could be OMG FIRST.
You know, I just recently got an iphone. I fucking love the thing, but boy have I gotten some blatantly ANGRY reactions from my friends. All of them have admitted now that they are only jealous. But I had at least 5 people say things like:
“Oh my god you got an Iphone!!??”
“Who are you? What have you done with my friend?”
“Was it worth it?”
All I have to say to all of the negative reactions regarding the iphone is, SHUT THE FUCK UP, seriously. It’s not like its that big of a deal, seriously. If I want to spend my money that I earned on a phone, then so be it. People need to stop judging so much. Anyways, Bill Maher isn’t funny anyways.
He pretty much nails it. People that HAVE to rush out for the latest and greatest are the biggest douchebags on the planet, next to those that worship any pos from Apple of course.
i guess maher has a razr
As an early-adopter I waited in line for 2 days for the iPhone as well as the opening of a new Apple Store (They happened at the same time). And, I must say I had the time of my life. Was I upset when they dropped the price by $200? Yes! Was a pissed off? No. Early adopters know that they are going to pay a premium, but have to b*tch about the price drops in order to save face. Otherwise they would just look like a douche bag who dosn’t know how to spend his money.
Seriously, stop judging people. Whether or not you think it worthwhile to wait in line is irrelivant to anyone other than you. Does it hurt or effect you in any way that someone waited in line for an iphone? Get a life and stop telling other people to.
i didnt wait in line at all + i love the thing. iphone haters move one, just buy one. ya’ll r just jealous.
meh, I’m still gonna wait for v.2 or when they can make it do the basic funtions as well as my Nokia 6600 and through a provider other than AT&T out of the box. As pretty as it is, it’s still an over-priced phone.
Haha, you probably weren’t a nerd…
Until you complained on your blog that someone called you one.
Bill is funny. Waiting in line for a phone is lame.
Meh. I think he’s right *and* lame all at once — picking on Apple fans has always been picking at low-hanging fruit
That said, you *always* pay a premium for buying something shiny and new when it first comes out. There’s no sense in whining that the people who waited awhile to buy one didn’t pay as much.
I stood in one line, once, on a “Black Friday,” for one specific purpose: I couldn’t sleep anyway and I wanted to see just how crazy people actually get in those lines. Damn that was fun
actually i found the joke to be hilarious.
youre wayy oversensitive just like all the ifanboys.
seriously, calm down, just because youre a businessman with a girlfriend doesnt mean most, or many of those people standing in the line werent hyped up fanboys with nothing better to do than wait 6 hours to spend $600 on a phone.
I keep seeing people use “jealousy” a reason for bashing the iPhone early adopters. Errrr… I think thats a bit delusional; I think you what you may not understand is that most really really don’t care about having the newest and greatest phone (or any other gadget), especially if it isn’t necessary. It’s just really hard for many of us to comprehend spending a significant amount of time and (extra) money on something that will predictably decrease in price and increase in availability in the relatively near future.
If you are happy with your purchase and glad you waited, that’s wonderful; but don’t assume someone is jealous when they don’t understand your priorities.
Jon, you’re an idiot.
Bill Maher’s joke is that you could have spent that $200 on something for your girlfriend. But I guess since she’s the type who will wait in line FOR YOU, she doesn’t care how she’s treated anyways
You say “nerds” couldn’t afford the iPhone, but “business folk” can. Haha. Of the nerds and business folk I know, the nerds make just as much.
maher hit it on the head there.. the march of the idiot consumer..
I’m just back in the country after being away. What is going on? People stood in line for a frekin’ *phone*? Are you all gone mad? Has every other problem been solved and all possible distractions removed? A line? For a phone?
It’s really not that big of a deal. Emotions get the best of us, and putting yourself in the public eye brings out all kinds of people who think differently.
so your girlfriend had to stay in line for six hours? poor girl, I can imagine how to spend those six hours in much better way…you sent her there to stood for YOUR phone. As I said, poor girl.
@ Jabba - if you’d have read through the comments you’d know she volunteered to go, nobody “sent her there.”

[...] do I say that? Because Bill Maher got it exactly right some days ago, even if people disagree. There is absolutely no need to buy things on the first day. Wait for the other fools that do so. [...]
