McCain Praises Baghdad Security, Iraqis Laugh

Republican Senator and presidential candidate John McCain toured a market in Baghdad Sunday and praised the level of security that was now being seen in Iraq. Ignoring the fact that details of his trip were kept confidential for “security reasons,” McCain visited Baghdad’s al-Sharqi district, where in January twin car bombs killed 88 people and injured 160 others. On the subject of Iraqi security, McCain had this to offer:

“The American people are not getting the full picture of what’s happening here. They are not getting the full picture of the drop in murders, the establishment of security outposts throughout the city, the situation in Anbar, the deployment of additional Iraqi brigades who are performing well and other signs of progress,” he said.

While it is true that the American people never get the full picture, it is also true that what Senator McCain was saying at that very moment was a line of hypocrisy. Yes, Senator McCain did tour the market and there were no incidents, but could you or I safely make the same trek? Hardly.

You see, what CNN didn’t report with the rest of this article was that Senator McCain wasn’t taking a casual stroll through al-Sharqi; oh no, he was accompanied by 100 US soldiers, 3 Blackhawk Helicopters, and 2 Apache Gunships, not to mention the bulletproof vest he had on.

Get the full picture, vote McCain in ‘08!
