Internet Shows Backbone - Proves Resilient to Crackers

At least 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic came under attack today in one of the worst attacks against the internet since 2002. The only problem — nobody noticed.

The hackers, who largely disguised their origin, have been traced to South Korea. The attacks targeted UltraDNS, the company responsible for managing web sites with .org top-level domains. Among the targeted systems was the United States Defense Department.

In a show of muscle for the Internet, this was basically a replica of an attack that occurred in 2002 on the exact same computers and had a much more serious effect. However, this time around the global network scoffed at the attack and conducted business as usual.
